From the Daily Herald : St. Matthew Catholic Church, Glendale Heights, IL 2010 marks their 50th
anniversary.
St. Matthew kicked- off the 50th anniversary of its founding with
an inspiring and outstanding concert on April 9th by
the popular, Christian band, "Selah". St. Matthew Community
began its jubilee celebration with gusto, as well it should! The
parish is a vibrant part of the Glendale Heights scene. The origins of St.
Matthew Catholic Church came to be in February 1960 with
the ground breaking for the church building and school. The Diocese of
Joliet knew there was a definite need for a church in the Glendale Heights
area for the burgeoning population. As with all communities, it
started humbly with the creation of a small church structure. On May
3, 1963 St. Matthew Church was officially dedicated. For 32
years the enthusiastic, growing community worshiped in the original and
humble sanctuary. In 1986, The Carmelite Friars arrived to administer the
parish in behalf of the Joliet Diocese. In March, 1992, a new era began.
St. Matthew had ground breaking for a new church edifice. On June
12, 1993 the First Mass and Dedication of the new and spacious
church took place. St. Matthew Community now has an average of 2,500
people at Masses on each weekend, a growing Hispanic presence, a
fine grammar school of 370 plus students, a religious education program
for several hundred, caring ministries for the parish community as well as
many outreach ministries for the greater Glendale Heights area. The Parish
has been a grace for all who worship, participate, and serve because of
the Gospel mandate ‘to love God with all our heart and our neighbor as
ourselves! May St. Matthew continue the good work that was begun in
her fifty years ago!
